Y’know, Barry, 99.9% of the rock acts performing right now could learn a thing or two from these air guitarists in regards to putting it on the line and giving the audience a show with some “real” energy. I mean, when was the last time an actual guitarist put on shows with that much energy and enthusiasm?
Okay, I had to bail when it got to C Diddy’s past – only because it’s after Midnight and tomorrow is a work day…
The delight in this is that I’ve done it – most everyone I know has done it, and the fact that there’s a competition for it – well, the News guy said it best, that – “that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.”
(Albeit quite entertaining)
I’ll probably go back and watch it all. But not for the “energy” to which ug refers. I’ll be looking for the technicianship (is that a word?).
I have been watching my older brother play “real” guitar for most of my life (I do NOT play). I’ve always watched his left (fingering) hand. And I have sung with several bands over the years; I always watch the fingering…
Best air guitar I’ve ever seen was in 1975, in my parent’s basement, when my best buddy Ken “played” ‘Woodchopper’s Ball’ by 10 Years After (Highly recommended: 10 Years After “Undead” – before they became a freak show). I must admit, it may have been the LSD, but damn, he played that sucker note for note!

In 1975 at the age of thirteen my friend and I formed an “Air Band”.
We practiced in my room to many albums. We would switch on & off to different instruments, but I prefered guitar and he favored drums. I remember our favorite jams came from the record, Birds of Fire by the “Mahavishnu Orchestra”.

My friend and I were around 13 when we would play music in my room and”Air Jam” to all the instruments. I favored guitar while he preferred drums. One of our favorites I remember was, “Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra”.

I have been playing air theremin for years. I do a mean “Dazed and confused”.
Myself I’m an air piano guy. Sharleena’s more the air triangle type. We play very interesting concerto’s between the two of us!

Yes, that is an excellent idea! And I am just fool enough to go through with it! Without realizing it I started playing Air Guitar at a “stop light” when City of Tiny Lights came on my car stereo today. So I will be ready!
