Oh my. How I would like to be able to attend this festival. And not just for the Zappa.

I know you will go there to hear some really fine modern music, performed by a really fine modern music ensemble, conducted by a really fine (and great) conductor – and you can throw your underpants onto the stage as well! Exciting!

Seriously, this seems very interesting, but the atmosphere is sort of stuffy establishment, don’t you think? And those fierce ZFT copyright notices and overused moustaches don’t loosen up things, either.

But any chance to hear Ensemble Modern perform Zappa and the rest of their repertoire is more than welcome…

Does anyone know if those glimpses of Density 21.5 and Octandre are from the Rage and Fury tapes?

Quite probably. But the stuffy establishment has the ability to put on such an event. And yes, the ZFT’s dark presence… but Ligeti, Stravinsky, Varese, etc. can survive that nonsense.

The mp3 album data says “Varese: Arcana, Ameriques, Ionization, Etc.”, which I presume is the Boulez 1991 recording, “Varese: Arcana; Ameriques; Ionization; Offrandes; Density 21.5; Octandre; Integrales”

Clearly I don’t know how to use the quotey thing.

Thanks so much for posting this!

FWIW, Ojai is pretty anti-stuffy as far as serious music venues go.

The concert by the Ensemble Modern in the Libbey Bowl really looks like a highlight. It seems like such a quaint venue for FZ’s classical works. It would be a great idea if someone were to film the event. Yet since the ZFT is involved, I can bet they put the kibosh on any such idea.

  8. Dark Clothes says:

The Ensemble Modern have rehearsed and performed many works by Varese in the last couple of years, and some pieces were broadcast on German radio earlier this year.

The time for a proper EM release of Varese is long overdue. Perhaps this concert event will be another stimulus for that?
