Recorded at the Theatre de L’Empire, in Montmartre, Paris, on November 7th, 1980, for the French TV program ‘Chorus’ – promoting their eleventh studio album, Doc at the Radar Station – Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band performed a 30 minute set.
The set list:
Nowadays A Woman’s Gotta Hit A Man (above)
Best Batch Yet
Dirty Blue Gene
Safe As Milk (below)
Flavor Bud Living
Bat Chain Puller
Big Eyed Beans From Venus (below)
Capt. Beefheart & the Magic Band:
Don Van Vliet (aka. Capt. Beefheart) – vocals, saxophone, gongs
Jeff Morris Tepper – guitar, slide guitar
Richard Midnight Hatsize Snyder – guitar, slide guitar, bass guitar
Eric Drew Feldman – bass guitar, synthesizer, electric piano
Robert Williams – drums, percussion
Gary Lucas – glass finger guitar, french horn
Note of interest: about a week earlier on November 1st at the Paradiso, Amsterdam concert Beefheart endured a heckler in the audience who shouted and made stupid noises in between songs. Instead of just ignoring him, though, Vliet decided to argue with him (this makes for increasingly interesting and humorous listening as Beefheart cuts the heckler down to size instead of just having him removed).

Thanks for that Urbangraffito! Don has been on my radar (pun intended) a lot lately. P.J. Harvey’s new album with John Parish is very Beefheartian (plus she’s got Eric Drew Feldman in her ranks!) and I just bought an album by Gary Lucas with Najma Aktar, which is a mix of Indian music and Blues, which all music lovers should listen to. Plus I got a Beefheart live compilation called ‘Magnetism’ recently, which is on continous play.
