The Hungry Freaks – Viva Zappa!

Based in Ottawa, Ontario – The Hungry Freaks are English Canada’s only Mothers of Invention era coverband, combining personal and faithful renditions of the early music of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention with their own fresh interpretation (as the video, above, live at Barstorm 7, in Finch, ON, demonstrates). Click here to hear their versions of such classics as “Magic Fingers”, “I’m So Happy I Could Cry”, and “DogMeat” on their MySpace page.

Next door, in Quebec, Viva Zappa is still French Canada’s only Zappa coverband. Check out their website to hear full versions from their Zappa tribute album, Viva Zappa: The Purple Lagoon Sessions 2006 & 2007 – “Stinkfoot”, “Lucille”, “Crew Slut”, “Lumpy Gravy/Harry You’re A Beast Medley”, as well as an excellent live version of “King Kong”. If you like what you hear, download the entire album from Zappateers (torrent).

Hmmmm. Somewhere someone with the initials GZ is having a kanipshin. Don’t you just love Canadian copyright laws?

Oh wow. Hungry Freaks’ vocalist in I’m So Happy I Could Cry sound A LOT like FZ. Still to check the rest, but the similarity is mindblowing.

What about the Whip It Out Ensemble? Or are they in Canadian Canada?

The Whip It Out Ensemble were active between 1997 and 2006 (and were included in Cordelia Record’s 2008 ’20 Extraordinary Renditions’) in and around Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Since then, their only presence has been a virtual one. Hopefully, their hiatus is only temporary.

  4. Andrew says:

Aye, as they’ll be on Cordelia Records’ 2010 ’21 Burnt Weeny Sandwiches’!
