While Zappa Plays Zappa were performing at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix, Arizona on February 26th, 2009, Dweezil Zappa spoke about his early influence – Eddie Van Halen – the day Eddie called up the Zappa family home wanting to meet Frank Zappa – before performing his cover of “Eruption“.

listen to him GO!
Nifty. But let’s not have too much Van Halen creep into the repertoire – you might get a cease and desist order from Eddie’s lawyers!
ZPZ are touring in June/July, including Europe. I’ll be at the gig in Cambridge, UK.
I wish he would cease and desist full stop 😉
Ironically speaking Dweezil & Ed are out on the golf range this AM.

I don’t think you need worry about KUR turning into some kind of Van Halen weblog, xorg. I posted this because it was FZ related, and revealed how accessible Zappa, himself, was to others even after 1980. I mean, any bozo could have pretended to be Eddie Van Halen…

Here is another example where the editorial aspect of these fan websites get out of control. Yes KUR created a BLOG that is based on a performance as captured in a Youtube Video from February of 2009.
From the editors view in response “XORG” what does the DZPZ repertoire have to do with editorial concerns of what BLOGs get published at KUR and the miles of pootage that follow the editorial direction? It seems obvious that xorg does not want too much Van Hallen in the DZPZ repertoire and that is a separate issue of what the editors do here. It took KUR close to 14 months to connect the Zappa dots on this one. Let’s hope the ambulance arrives a little faster when I need it.
Dweezil went to a golf range with Eddie Van Hallen today.
There you go folks, that is up to date reporting.
Yes there are some of those long awaited projects that I want just as much as anyone but certainly some have been delivered. Need I remind anyone for the countless time how the Uncle Meat Movie was advertised on Mothermania in 1968 and took another two decades to get released.
Seriously Gail, you gotta get yourself into a Writing 101 class, or browse through On Style, because this post borders on incoherence. Dont think I’m trying to be mean or take this as an attack, just drop the playful Zappasque banter and pseudo-legalese.
Use bulletin points if you have to… just remember to write in nice clean sentences which convey carefully thought out statements presenting facts and ideas which are collected to communicate a central thesis.
The thesis is there, in your posts… I can (sort of) read what your trying to say. But honestly, the aesthetic you’ve chosen makes you come off as confrontational and deranged.
NOBODY LIKES A DERRIDA
Nobody likes diarrhea either 😉
Is it the Roxy ambulance?

Hmmmmm. How I meander through the internet is frankly my business. If something strikes me as somewhat interesting, I post it. For the most part, what Dweezil or ZPZ does rarely deserve a post. Their videos that are available on YouTube are, in my opinion, substandard, and I dare not post anything copyrighted by the ZFT. So what’s left? Dweezil telling stories about his Dad. At least that has historical value at KUR. As for Dweezil playing golf…that’s in the same realm as him scratching his ass, and about as worthy of posting.

I’m pretty sure the bizzare ramblings you are reading are not GZ! Its GT.. Gary Titone aka Trendmonger aka Graffitti on the wall aka Wing Tip Shoes aka well you get the drift! A man of many personalities….all of them immediately apparent due to his er unique writing stlye.
Kill Ugly Grammar.

Dear Fucking Christ!!!
Sweet Bleeding Jesus!!!
I pray, PLEASE put Urbangraffito in charge of
the Zappa legacy. Please!!?!?!?
I am tired of the ZFT tyranny.
When’s gonna be my time, lawd?
Lawdy lawd, when gwine be my time???
Sometimes I wonder if Dweezil’s solos wouldn’t be better if he went balls out metal style that he grew up playing or playing Frank’s solos note for note. Its this in between limbo where he plays some frank licks then tries to improvise, just comes off stilted and awkward. I’d rather hear something really passionate, DZ playing as DZ, or a note for note album rendition of Inca or Montana solos, but none of this in between stuff.
Now here is a nice solo ::thumbs up::

Excellent find, metafunj. That was, indeed, one of the better ZPZ Youtube vids, and a nice solo by Dweezil. The other guitarists were also quite entertaining. They’ve come a long way from the ensemble I saw that just stood about taking cues from Dweezil. Bravo.
Just making sure I am not seeing things.
Dweezil plays a nice version of Van Halen.
KUR posters tuck into the inevitable snark-fest.
Really? I mean FUCKING REALLY???
It’s monotonous. Dweezil this and Gail that.
It’s like everyone is at KUR is Simon Cowell
with their slack, impertinant, personal agenda.

Wow. I mean WOW!!!
That’s AWESOME!!!

Amy, it wasn’t KUR that hoisted Dweezil and Zappa Plays Zappa up as the only “so called” authorized cover band – that was the Zappa Estate, itself. I mean, c’mon, “Accept No Substitutes”? I’ve had the opportunity lately to listen to dozens of ZPZ field recordings, in depth.
ZPZ is really no better and no worse than any other band performing Zappa compositions. They fill a niche, and they fill it extremely well. They have their strengths, they have their flaws. Some concerts stand out as exceptional while others seem as though the band never showed up at all (going through the motions). Some nights they perform note for note, other nights they improvise. You just never know which version of ZPZ you’re going to get (albeit, that very same criticism can be applied to just about every other band that covers Zappa) In the case of special guests, at times musical magic was made, while at other times extremely poor use was made of them (why invite a Steve Vai or a Terry Bozzio onstage and not let them loose?).
Remember, it was the ZFT, itself, that sought to place Dweezil and ZPZ above every other band. They chose the yard stick by which ZPZ would be measured, not KUR. Don’t be surprised when we use it.
If I, or anyone else at KUR, have a personal agenda, Amy, this is it – to hear the best possible interpretations and arrangements of Zappa’s compositions.
To that end, we enter into open dialogue.
