Next August 24, The Ed Palermo Big Band will be playing at the City Winery, which is cool because they’re one of the superior FZ tributes out there IMHO — but there’s a twist:
As the night progresses we will find opportunities to pair Zappa tunes with a selection of world-class wines that pair with the different period and themes of Frank’s career. The wine focus of this educational and entertaining night will be Zinfandel, a truly original American wine with its roots in the Old World, but a product of the hard work of immigrants, just as Zappa created a truly unique and original sound from his humble beginnings.
Cute, though I’d personally prefer a beer themed venue: a nice Duvel to kick things off with Titties ‘n Beer, a lovely Grimbergen to go with Cruisin’ For Burgers perhaps — oh the possibilities!
Oh No, Zappa “watered down” with wine for non-musically-adventurous yuppies.
(Sounds like a good marketing gimmick though!)
If I remember “The real Zappa book” right, Zappa hated beer and people who drink beer and what beer does to people more than he hated wine. So this is fine by me! Not that anyone asked, but anyway.
If you are BIG fan of Ed Palermo’s Zappa arrangements as I am, the fact that I don’t live anywhere near The Ed Palermo Big Band’s New York stomping ground is a definite disadvantage since one can well appreciate the sheer costs of touring with such an exceptionally large ensemble. So, if you can make to any one of Ed Palermo’s sporadic live performances through the years, I suggest that you do.
I’ve often wondered why Ed Palermo hasn’t released a compilation of his live New York recordings since they appear to be his forte. Something like, ‘Yes, Suzie, They Still Do That On Stage In New York, Volume One’.
By the way, Barry, check out this Ed Palermo interview over at Kittysneezes.com:

In my perception FZ didn’t so much hate beer in and of itself — although he did definitely have an opinion on what happens to certain people who decide to become intoxicated by said beverage. He was equally outspoken when it comes to wine BTW: “from your downers and your wine” (City Of Tiny Lights)…

Am reading, thx! 🙂
I once read or listened to an interview where Zappa stated he loved fine wine and he said when he drank alcohol that is what he preferred. Also, something similar happened in Bordeaux earlier this year, I found these stories being a Zappa and Wine freak.
Ooh! A wine & (Suzy Cream)cheese party with Eddie!
I’m not into the vino, so I’ll skip it. Too bad, it looks like a cool space downtown on Varrick.
I’ll wait with Barry for a beer and Palermo combo.
Don’t worry Tjodolf, we’re not the beer drinking marchers, Frank mentions in his book. 🙂
:)I’ve got one, ” I’ll have a Pilsner Urquell and a Penguin in Bondage”.

[/quote]Ditto! I’ve caught a few and they are very enjoyable.
Eddie Loves Frank! He really does. Nobody has more fun than Ed, playing Zappa’s music.

But in a swanky downtown venue like City Winery, they’ll be plenty of clueless yuppie scum! Regardless, Ed Palermo & His Big Band will give a super tight, enthusiastic, and totally mind blowing show.
