The Frank and Mikey Show

I was recently arranging and updating my personal MySpace profile page when I came across these two video gems: Frank Zappa’s “Watermelon in Easter Hay” live with Mike Keneally and the rest of the 1988 band, and The Mike Keneally Band live performing “My Dilemma”.

Rumour has it that The Dweez will be busting out “Watermelon” on this year’s ZPZ tour. Did Frank really say that only Dweezil should perform this song?

    Keneally’s great . . . btw.

  2. Sharleena says:

That version of Watermelon made me cry.
Is this the concert in Barcelona?
    I miss the guy.

  3. Roscoe Bledsoe says:

Ill take the vid of the ’76 performance of Black Napkins on The Mike Douglas show over that robotic ’88 version anyday. Mikey’s tv band had more soul and swing than that band–ouch that hurts to say but Wackerman/Thunes/Kenneally has no jazz feeling to add to this one. Dull.

(and you know anything with Travers the toadie on drums on it is gonna suck )

Cannot say I agree with every point you made (besides the last one, perhaps) Roscoe. One thing is crystal clear, though. If anyone is carrying on the musical legacy of FZ, it’s Mike Keneally and Bryan Beller.

  5. Chris says:

Yeah, that FZ video is from the 1988 Barcelona show. I have a shoddy VHS copy of that concert, and the interesting thing about that show is that the close-up of MK in the beginning of the song is THE ONLY TIME they show Mike in a close-up, which is kind of a shame. Mikey rocks!

BTW, Roscoe…the ’88 band…robotic? You must be confusing them with the ’84 band.
