Leading authors have named 17th-Century Spanish story Don Quixote as the best work of fiction ever written, ahead of works by Shakespeare, Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky.

mmmh…that’s pretty difficult…I’ve read Don Quixote (in spanish, of course) and it’s pretty good. But i wouldn’t say it’s THE book; i think the authors have voted it because perhaps it’s one of the first kicks of fiction style. It combines technique, humor, a great story.
But i’d rather prefer other contemporary authors: Gabriel Garcia Marquez “One Hundred Years of Solitude”; Isabel Allende “The Stories of Eva Luna”…What about science fiction? Ballard’s “The Drowned World” is magnificent! As well as Spider Robinson’s “Stardance”, or Douglas Adams “Hitch-hickers Guide..”…And Tom Robbins “Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas”?
Dunno, i believe it’s too much difficult to decide for just one author/book…
Being totally subjective here, the book that has had the greatest impact on my (at the time of reading, quite impressionable) mind, was The Singing Detective written by Dennis Potter. This was actually a screenplay for a BBC-series, but it blew my mind.
I agree that it’s near impossible to cast an objective vote as to which book makes for best fiction ever…
I like that one with that Hat, and then there’s like, this Cat, and they do something with these kids, and then, like these two Things come out, and the house is a mess. But then like, the Cat fixes it all.
I thought it was a good book. Hey ladies, give me an e-mail
