Thanks for posting the interview, Sharl. I think GZ is a little hard on Ryko. They did their job and they did it well. Best of Frank Zappa? I don’t recall that compilation. I’m glad they did Strictly Commercial and Genteel, it helped me to decide what I wanted to buy of Franks numerous titles. I think she has a right to be pissed at VH1. Sounds pretty stupid. I hope she keeps her promise and produces 4 or 5 releases per year or else no one is ever going to believe her or the ZFT again.
On another note the letters on my license plate are “GZ”. I wonder if that says anything about me?
“GAIL: A friend of mine had a dream that there were 100 releases from the vault, and I said, “Guess what? I think it’s true!” And I’m not going to stop until I get them all out! I’m hoping that Vaulternative will have four to five releases a year.”
Hold me, I think I’m going to faint.

Ryko created several ‘Best Of’ compilations – though I think compilations is too generous a term. They created several ‘Primers’, that were really only good for folks unfamiliar with FZ output. If Ryko hadn’t done such a shitty job with FZ’s legacy, there would never have been a TBN Hit Parade.
I think Gail was justifiably harsh with Ryko, as their only concern seemed a bottom-line – not a promotion of his work.

The interview was conducted in June, when the project was still in its infancy. We’ve seen how well it’s worked so far…
4 to 5 releases a year? Not very likely…
Now would someone kindly get Barry off the fucking floor? I’d like to get some vacuuming done.

Yes the compilations were for beginners and that is what I was when I bought them. So they were a good idea, esp for me. You want to attract new people into your camp, so that the whole enterprise grows. Yes, Ryko probably could have done more promotion, yes they could have staggered releases, etc. But, you know what, they did get the CD’s out there! And Frank is still a featured artist in their catalog. I think Gail was complaining about Ryko to take the heat off of herself. By June the release was already running into problems.
I do agree with you, Sofa about doing more themed type compilations. I love the Hit Parades. I was just listening to YCHTIC (the religmous disc) this morning (how appropriate)and just loving it! You (and the Big Note) did a excellent job. I am proud to be member, now, of that truly fine organization.
