My Brother Was A Mother

Simultaneously with a new edition of Nigey Lennon’s Being Frank: My Time With Frank Zappa, a new Zappa related book is coming out this June. It is written by Patrice “Candy” Zappa, Frank’s baby sister, is entitled “My Brother Was A Mother”, and focuses on the Zappa’s early “nuclear” years. From the promo: “She recounts the childhood of her immigrant father Francis Zappa, who spent his early days in Baltimore working in his father’s barber shop; tells the hilarious tale of her mother RoseMarie Zappa, who broke off a going-nowhere relationship with a boorish hockey player, then met Francis and consequently changed the course of musical history; and, of course, describes what it was like growing up with an older brother who “loved to blow things up” and who became obsessed with music at an early age.”
We’re expecting a review copy to land at Barry Towers this March. Stay tuned!

I look forward to both! (Tho’ I admit it’s frustrating having purchased Nigey’s first volume, to hear, “Ooops! More stuff”.)
The additions that Candy brought to Russo’s work were fascinating. It’ll be great to see those observations expanded upon…

I have read the Candy Zappa book and boy that was not so easy. It seems to me that Candy and Frank had not seen each other very often in their lives, but still Candy wanted in some way or another let us know that Frank was her briother .What she comes up with is total unintersting stories that she could get from other sources so nothing new under the sun. Even two pages about how and why she shaves her legs!!! The last part of the book is the worst when she wants to tell us that she is NOW, after her brothers death, still in contact with him….VERY SAD INDEED!!! The best part of the book are the pictures which are unknown untill now and that tells the story more complete then Candy’s words….that Frank was in a different world allready when those pictures were made.
