A quick question for the KUR staff: do you know what ‘shit on a shingle’ is?
I’ll give you a chance to respond before answering…
Her’s a hint, tho’ it’s far more edible than the stuff on those cards!

I haven’t got the faintest idea what “shit on a shingle” is, but I found the term irresistibly catchy…

I searched on the dictionary, tryed to make a relation but couldn’t get the full meaning of the expression. Enlighten us, please, Sofa! (btw, i feel tempted to prepare the Rosy Perfection Salad tonight. Ah, delights of modern cuisine..!)

S.O.S. is chipped beef on toast. Here’s a recipie: http://www.navywives.com/cookbook/sos.html

It’s one of those delightful dishes you get at military mess halls, and yes, it DOES taste better than the name implies.

  5. SOFA says:

Thanks for the link, Bro! That is precisely what it is – ‘Chipped Beef on Toast’.
I was fortunate enough to have spent all of my ‘at sea’ time in the Navy aboard a ship that has a genius for a mess officer. We ate very, very well. SOS was a Saturday Brunch specialty, and was rivaled only by the Biscuits and Gravy. A derogatory name for GI food, that – when prepared right – is actaully quite delicious…

The fisherman would like you to know that he has an impressive pair of buoys, too.

In the Navy it ground meat not chip beef

my step-grandfather used to make shit on a shingle for us kids… shitty shingles, we’d call it…

there is also a very nasty version made with tuna and peas.

Hey I’m looking for a recipe for shit on a shingle using ground beef instead of shipped beef any one got one. thanks it’s for a bunch of marines who requested it.

Just substitute ground beef for the chipped beef.
Brown the beef in a frying pan, pour off the grease. add the flour, keep heating as you add some milk (fresh, canned or reconstituted powdered – they all work), a bullion cube and season to taste.
Best served over hot biscuits with a fried egg on top. Add hot sauce as desired.
Try variations – add mushrooms or onions.
I n-e-v-e-r was served “chipped” beef in 21 years in the Army, except while attached to the US Navy.

Microwave SOS?: Break up a pack of brown & serve pork or beef breakfast sausages. Heat them in a microwave until they start to sizzle. Add a can of condensed mushroom or cream of chicken soup. Heat through – if too thick add a little milk or water. Serve over toast or biscuits.

It is gratifying to know there is a whole subculture out there seeking SOS!!

SOS was considered a food group in the Army, especially during those November bone-chilling rains at places like Baumholder, Germany training area at 0400 hours. SOS was key to survival, as far as I was concerned.

I’ve been casting about for a good recipe, using ground beef.

I spent 28 years in parachute infantry and special forces units, and can vouche for the enthusiastic following SOS has. I am amazed that you do not find in on the menu at diners.

BTW, neither have I ever seen the variety.

Will collect SOS recipes, try them, and report back. BTW, I seem to recall that bay leaf was part of the recipe.

Comments on this vital food group most welcome.

    Cheers, Ken

My husband was in the Navy and ALWAYS talks about the tomatoey shit on a shingle he ate at breakfast onboard the ship. I am hoping to find the recipe to surprise him some morning. The only think I found that even slightly resembles what he talks about is a recipe called “Old Navy Hamburger Breakfast DeLite” at: http://www.netcooks.com/recipes/Breakfast/Old.Navy.Hamburger.Breakfast.DeLite..html

can anyone tell me if that sounds like a close recipe served in the Navy?

  13. Ila says:

OK, I just got this in from Naval Sources:
This is for the Shit on a Shingle with the Hamburger and tomato base gravy.
