Crimson Tide

I always figured there was more to Steely Dan lyrics than meets the –uh– ear. The Steely Dan Dictionary to the rescue. “Crimson Tide” (from Deacon Blues): “The nickname for the University of Alabama’s sporting teams (particularly American football), so called because of their distinctive dark red jerseys.”

I was following some links from the Steely Dan Dictionnary and here’s what I have found.
    Quite surprising!

Ah, so the mystery is finally solved…audio evidence of the “roulade” that Cathy Berberian couldn’t sing! Now all we need is, a) a photo of the squonk in the act of actually producing its tears; b) a street map of downtown Muswellbrook; c) the wherewithal to bring back the Boston Rag.

I’d say from that evidence that Berberian sang extremely well, but re-arranging as blatently insipid a song as “I Want To Hold Your Hand” has a Velveetage factor of about 8/10.

Well, she could have done without *quite* so much vibrato but that’s just my personal taste in singing.

    Berberian to appear on rrholidayescape!

    It’s gotta be true!
