Well that was telling, wasn’t it. Seems the majority of Z-fans who read KUR, are in the 30 to 40 range, closely followed by the 40+ contingent. Beyond/below that, online interest fades. But hey! We have a new poll for you. Check the polling box to the right…

And now for something completely different –
I don’t believe that we ever heard your opinion
of the movie “Monster Road”… Well, didja like
it ?
Re Monster Road: gotta tell you in all honesty I was somewhat underwhelmed. Maybe my expectations were too high, I dunno. I found the movie to be too short (80min) and sort of lacking in depth here and there. Compared to “Crumb” (the comparison is inevitable), Monster Road just doesn’t cut it for me. That’s not to say it’s a bad movie, mind you. It has its strong moments – and it’s quite funny throughout. My favorite moment is the shot inside Bickford’s dad’s house where the camera focuses on a picture of Nixon – underneath it, B’s dad has put up a note saying “He looks pretty honest here”. Mucho clay animation goodness too. Most certainly worth your money and time. A mindbending experience though? Nope…
May i interject? I have to say i have a special fascination with Bickford’s works, so, beforehand i was already in love with the idea of watching a movie about him.
I agree with Barry about the fact that the movie is too short. That’s not necessarily a bad remark, because i kinda like the material that was chosen to be included; it’s just that the length has an influence on how deep you can go (“Crumb” lasts for over two hours!), in the end, and i felt that something was lacking. I wasn’t so disappointed as Barry tho. To me it’s already a very good thing that someone has made a documentary about an artist like BB, brought him back to the screen, and made people talk about him the way we are here. For that i’m grateful.
Unfortunately we got to see the film in Ghent, among a bunch of snotty college kids that were giggling jadedly all along the movie, which caused me to wish to blow their brain cells with an obus, if possible… (like Bickford says in the documentary, i should make an animation movie and sublimate these kinds of instincts :) )
So, resuming: i liked the movie, but i need to watch it again. I’m not satisfied…
There you have it, i interjected!
Re: Old (age) Poll…
Most polls only give you 100% but with KUR polls you get a little bit more :)
Re: New Poll…
Why such a limited and dated choice? Where is the Ambient Techno Industrial Jungle Hip-Hop button? Or at least an Other/None Of The Above button.
Hey, I read KUR and I’m 20! The boots are especially gratifying since I was 4 years old when FZ last toured, so I never got to see the man live. My dad did in ’71, but he says he was too stoned to remember anything. And my mom got to see the Beatles at Shea Stadium AND Hendrix when he opened for the Monkees (but she was there for the Monkees and still doesn’t like Jimi). Sigh.
I don’t like the answers to your new poll. Other than Zappa, I listen to the Beatles and some other ’60s rock and folk, some jazz fusion and King Crimson, some ethnic music, some electronic music but only the spastic attention-deficit kind (so I guess the Zappaesque kind), some noise rock, some weird Japanese bands like the Ruins and eX-Girl, Stravinsky and Varese, and I’ve probably forgotten a whole bunch. So my tastes don’t “mostly” fit into any of those categories.
Duncan: lol, I’m aware the polling script isn’t 100% fullproof — workin’ on it!
As for the poll options: I’ve added the “Dance/trance/etc” option as well as the “None Of The Above” option.
We had Florida. This time it was Ohio. Next time it’s your turn, Minnesota!!
(I paraphrase Jorma Kaukonen)
The poll on the age profile of KUR’s readers is misleading because the results will reflect also the age progile of internet users. So what you have is a profile of internet users who are interested in FZ, and who could be bothered to answer the poll. Not an age profile of people who are interested in FZ.
The poll on ‘other music we listen to’ is also misleading because most individuals listen to more than one kind of music e.g I listen to as much jazz as rock, and classical too.
So I recommend you don’t take the results too seriously – your readers and FZ devotees(both actual and potential) come from a much wider range than 30-40 year old rock fans!
Apart from Frank Zappa’s music, I tend to listen to all of the above (re: your poll), depending on my mood at the time. I would think that your average FZ fan would listen to a wide and wildly eclectic range of music in their non-FZ listening. I know I do. I listen to everything from classicial opera to hip-hop.
