Rowlands (his wife) has stated that the role of improvisation in Cassavetes films has frequently been misunderstood. Though Cassavetes allowed and even encouraged his actors to ad lib while filming, only very rarely, she says, were entire scenes filmed as they were being improvised. Rather, Rowlands reports, the actors would improvise from Cassavetes’ scripts during rehersals, then Cassavetes would rewrite scenes based on the improvisations.
Really familiar way of creating, don’t you think? I just love this man, I think he’s one of the best directors of the XXth century. I’m lucky enough to have five of his movies – unfortunately Husbands (my favourite) is not available here yet. Check out, you’ll love his works!
John Cassevetes is buried in the same cemetery as FZ; Westwood Memorial Park, Los Angeles.
Just in case you were wondering…
Being a Wiki-freak :-), I made the hungarian page for Cassavetes (“made”=translated the english version). Ha!
