ZPZ: Eleven Shows To Go

Hot on the heels of the ZPZ tour, here’s some pictures from the Paris Zenith gig (June 5). No news from Athens (June 7) or Reykjavik (June 9) though… Hello? Did these shows actually take place? Next: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US! I’ll be most interested to read reviews from our American friends. The place to comment being of course right over here.

Saw Z plays Z last Sat. @ Chicago’s auditorium. Frank used to play this same wonderful venue on Mothers Day & Thanksgiving in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Apparently the same rabid fans were in attendence for this show.

The crowd gave ovation after ovation (well deserved, more on that later) and it appeared that Dweezil was sincerely touched by the passion.

The band was tight, musically it was as close to those 74-82 shows as you’ll ever hear again. Dweezil even took a stint at conducting. While somewhat kinder and gentler than Frank, Dweezil has taken on the challenge of his life and seems focused on keeping the flame burning in his Dad’s name.

The weakest point of the show was likely Mr. Vai. I saw him with Frank and since then the sizzle has outdone the steak. I’d rather hear some thoughtful playing rather than a caricature of every two handed speed riff and tooth picking posture that has driven Spinal Tap into a historical role in rock history.

Any way, see it, enjoy it, and don’t let Frank be forgotten.
