… well, it’s past 12:30 am and the gig went well. After soundchecking, I went over to Mr. Eugene Chadbourne to ask him about his experiences with Jimmy Carl Black (whom he has played with – I think you’ll find a link in the archives to an mp3 where Chadbourne accompanies JCB in a bluesy rendition of Willie The Pimp.)
Our gig: minor dissonant: i busted a string on my Telecaster right after the first song, and had to pull out the old Gibson SG quick as I could to continue. Having not played on it for a couple of years, I had a hard time remembering what the hell which button did what.
When the show was finished, we even got applause for “encores”, but we had to make way for the great mister Chadbourne, who gave one hell of a show. His guitar/banjo chops are really unique and inimitable. He sat there on a chair, very relaxed, and everybody loved every inch of what he was doing. Great night. And a full moon too!
I’ve bought one of Chadbourne’s CD’s, one in which JCB plays drums and sings on occasion. Maybe I’ll slap a couple mp3’s on here when I get the time.

Being a Chadbourne fan, I just have to ask you: “Barry, Which Chadbourne disc did you buy?”

  5. Barry says:

I bought “Jimi”, the one where Chadbourne plays guitar and sings, along with JCB and Pat Thomas; all Hendrix covers. I already feel sorry for not having bought more of his stuff.

    I bought “Jimi”
Great Choice! I have this and yes it is good. May I suggest visiting Dr. Chadbourne’s web site and indulging yourself in another “batch” of Chadbourne goodness? Thanks for sharing your experience (pun intended) Barry!

Luchmeat, now I’m curious: Chadbourne’s CD packaging looks to be very much “home made”. I mean, it’s made up of color copies glued on card board, handwritten pieces of paper tucked into the inner sleeve, and the CD itself which has the words “JIMI” written on it with a permanent marker, comes in a plastic bag. So, my question: what does your packaging look like?

Mine, too, is “home made” Barry! In fact, Dr. Chadbourne boasts about his home made goodness in his packaging to (in his words) discourage the use of jewel cases. Anyhow, mine is a cardboard deal that is folded strategically to encase the disc and the disc itself is a cdr that is hand-written on in magic marker. There are xeroxed photos of Chadbourne and Jimmy on the thing with some psychodelic renderings of Chadbourne in a (I guess) Jimi pose. A real piece of art if I must say so myself. If you like this recording, and you like Captain Beefheart, Chadbourne and Jimmy Carl Black have a couple (2) of admirable releases dedicated to the music of The Captain, which, I must admit are masterpieces. Enjoy!

Aah, so the packages are similar, even though they have an artisanal feel to them. Yes, I like the “Jimi” disc quite a lot. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll find any other Chadbourne CD’s in any music shops…

Go here and order online if you wish:

I know the feeling about finding these gems in the music stores…I’ve had little success special ordering his stuff, but better luck finding it used and at his web site. For what it’s worth!
