John said it the 2 august! I should get out more often…

  2. David Walley says:

Not to stir the pot, but as I listened to the album I thought that it was a pity that the folks
at The Chrome Dinette couldn’t have had a spin through the archives. I mean this is OK and all, but it’s only for completists who “fetish the underwear” so to speak. If the album was supposed to be covering that period, I would have hoped for
something a little less tame. It should have been “gems” from the period. These are not.

  3. gail says:

It’s one thing to post a boot, but to post legit fz releases? go ahead, hope you enjoy ripping off fz. Buy the fucking album

  4. Anonymous says:

The stuff on “Joe’s Corsage” is the dregs from the vault. Until Gail and the family start taking their job seriously and quit trying to foist off this sort of rubbish on the buying public, they have no right to complain about “ripping off FZ”.

  5. David Walley says:

Gee Gail, it’s so nice to hear from you after all these years! But the “album” could just as well be a boot!

  6. Dr Sharleena says:

The Chrome Dinette is a “radio station” on the internet which uses the Real Audio format- virtually impossible to record for the common mortal like me; John is not posting downloadable MP3’s. It is just for listening purposes, as far as i know. He is not earning any money from doing this (quite on the contrary, i’d presume). By this medium he is spreading his music, not ripping him off, nor do people who listen to the stuff in the site.
I was very doubtful about this disc, and now that i’ve had the occassion to listen to it, i’d say i’d buy it if it was available in the local record shop. Unfortunately it is not.

  7. Barry says:

    Unfortunately it is not.
    AMEN.
And “gail”: it’s cheapo to be abusing Gail Zappa’s name idly in order to put forth your point of view. Some of us may have issues with the way ZFT handles things (or vice versa) but this kind of convenient name theft devaluates your comment considerably. Be a man/woman: post comments as your warts-n-all self – if you don’t, we’ll shrug at your comment and let it slide. Accountability is what gives weight to your comment for the rest of us. (steps off soapbox, lands straight into obiquitous turd; mumbles “serenity now”)

  8. David Walley says:

yeoch! boy did I step in it! Still “gail” or no the comment stands. Though actually what I *meant* to say is that the people who run The Big Note which contains versions of “songs” eg. “Drowning Witch” etc should be the ones going through the vaults because they’d know how to select material. Which of course is not possible in this world, but…

  9. xorg says:

I am glad and extremely grateful that The Chrome Dinette is there, adding diversity to go along with the offical Zappa Radio station at http://www.zappa.com run by the ZFT. Another thing I’ve noticed is how we hear FZ on mainstream radio a lot more than we did when he was alive; for example on BBC Radio 3. But it seems everyone agrees that the famous Joe Travers and his bosses are not doing a very good job when it comes to releases from The Vault!

  10. Barry says:

TBN’s SOFA, BHJ, and MagicFingers as vaultmeisters! Goodness gracious THAT would be one hell of a treat! Dear Gail Zappa – if you’re reading this: check out thebignote.com and look at how these guys work with FZ’s material creatively. As D.Walley says: these guys know how to put together a compilation that’ll blow anyone’s socks off.

  11. Bob Again says:

Yes, my socks were blown off!! Dr. Sharleena has graciously returned one of them to me. The other, it seems, has been SMOKED. I said SMOKED!

  12. SOFA says:

Wow! Thank you for that compliment, David!
I think the essential difference in site postings vs Vault releases is that the site postings are done by fans according to what they want to hear, rather than what would “sell”. Plus, a lot of what gets posted at theBIGnote is selected by members, which gives a diversity in tastes that better suits FZ’s diversity of styles, rather than having the same person select all – or most – of the stuff.
The service that Mr. Healy performs with his Chrome Dinnette (Dr. Sharleena is quite correct; CD is a listening source, not a recording source), and Barry performs with KUR, and Roman with the Lyrics site are an invaluable resource to the FZ fan. These folks are all members of theBIGnote, which is a tribute to the Fans as much as it is to the Man.
We all love Frank, that’s why we’re here. Some of us prefer to love him “Warts and All”; some prefer to love him in the “Best Possible (Blue) Light”. IMO, that makes a difference.
    Thanks for your time,
    SOFA

  13. Bob Again says:

Very nice job, indeed! I have used and enjoyed the information, resources and MUSIC each of you has compiled and shared. My interest in all things Frank would have probably waned long ago without you (that goes for Barry and Dr. Sharleena, as well – David? I have a first edition of “No Commercial Potential” if that’s worth anything). The ZFT would do well to put your talents to use. I’m not wishing that on anyone, though. Why mess up your lives. Keep up the good work!
    truely, Bob.

  14. Magic Fingers says:

Being the curator of theBIGnote’s Musibrarium, as well as being responsible for the current “Drowning Witch Variations” David mentioned earlier, I just wanted to endorse Sofa’s comments (and thanks guys for your kind remarks….it’s always nice to know that someone out there appreciates the hard work that in particular Sofa and myself at TBN put in to spread the music. Tho’ of course we couldn’t do it without the ubiquitous Barry and the good Doctor ;o). However it seems to me that hard core FZ fans have a much better idea about what would sell than the ZFT have (as the release of Joe’s Corsage as opposed to the Roxy surely proves) because they happen to be the target audience. Are non-believers going to rush out to grab a copy? I think not. As with any form of selling, the ZFT’s market research, if it is any good, should point them exactly in the right direction when it comes to new releases. What’s that? They don’t do any? Hrrrmph!
Btw, and for the record, I do think that there are significant differences between a site such as the magnificent Chrome Dinette (rightly referred to above as a “radio station”) and TBN, which is why, bearing in mind that our musical offerings are designed for download, you won’t ever find a legit FZ release featured at the TBN Musibrarium while I’m residing there. And anyway (trust me on this one) I have plenty more concert gems lined up for your future entertainment (though I sincerely doubt whether the Dancin’ Fool Variations will ever see the light of day!! Let’s hope not eh? ;o))!

  15. henrietta mcphee says:

A bit fuckin’ SHORT isn’t it? I knows who I think is beintg ripped off and it ain’t the ZFT !!!!!!!!!!!

  16. John Healy says:

I want to echo the eloquent words of Mr. Fingers. I am always amazed that you folks find so much great material that is recorded so well. You guys really do some heavy lifting. We thank you.

I, on the other hand, started the Chrome Dinette as my own personal radio that I could listen to from anywhere. I am pleased that 50 or so other people find time to give a listen every day. A significant percentage of those start here I should add. I invest about an hour (and about 10 bucks) a month to do it.

I posted ‘Corsage’ for one reason only. So people could give it a good listen and decide whether or not they wanted to buy it. I like it and am happy I shelled out the cash. It sounds a LOT better on a real Hi-Fi than it does in a 20k RealAudio stream on cheezy PC speakers.

Sorry ‘Gail’ if you think I’m somehow ripping off your namesake. I assure you I am not.
