All About Crumb

I thoroughly envy Robert Crumb. Not for his shall-we-say wacky family background, mind you. It’s his incredible drawing talent I envy – combined with the sort of merciless self-criticism that only the truly great inflict upon themselves.

Art? I would say it is. Here at Casa Barry I frequently find myself perusing “La Historia De Mi Vida“, “Mis Problemas Con Las Mujeres“, “Mode O’Day” and “El Gato Fritz” for inspiration (spanish editions procured by Dr Sharleena, which is good because since my knowledge of spanish is limited to melon con jamon de mi corazon, it leaves me with only the drawings to focus on). Crumb’s currently working on “a ‘literal’ interpretation of Genesis” and there’s an exhibition of his work at the Kln Ludwig Museum (until Sept 12). Long may he keep on truckin’.

I totally love Robert; his – and other – underground comix helped shape my young cushions…
For anyone interested in reliving the 60’s thru these comix, they can still be had! Just visit http://www.ripoffpress.com/ They’re all there.
    Regards,

My stab at a Crumb-like drawing (birthday occasion) – phew Sofa, the stuff on that site is expensive!

That’s true… They probably figure that the stoned-out, hippy crowd that originally read that stuff are now yuppy lawyer types, with money to burn.
But, actually, those are cheaper than what I was paying on eBay, or thru used sources.
No one said reliving your childhood was cheap, Bro, or reliving some one else’s, for that matter… I was determined to re-live a small chunk of mine.
My mother (a wonderful woman that I love most deeply) – AAAAAARRRGH! – threw away the small collection I had when I went on my 4-year military “vacation”, along with a complete 6-year run of MAD Magazine (’69 – ’75). Whe I see the prices those mint originals go for on eBay, I feel better about not paying back all the money I’ve borrowed over the years…
