Pardon My French

Took the Commonly Confused Words Test. I am, so it seems, “advanced”: 100% Beginner, 80% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 72% Expert.

As stated in the result page: “This is an exceptional score.”

So there! Let’s see yours then?

    Mine: “Intermediate.
You scored 100% Beginner, 93% Intermediate, 56% Advanced, and 61% Expert!
You have a good understanding of beginner and intermediate level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of the beginner and intermediate level questions correct. This is a good score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don’t use them properly. You got a respectable score.”
Now, is it “Take a deep __________.
    breath, or
    breathe?”

I’m never sure about that…Correct replies should be there.

“Advanced – You scored 100% Beginner, 86% Intermediate, 87% Advanced, and 66% Expert!”
The toughest thing about a test like this is that English, as with other ‘living’ languages, is dynamic – not static – and therefore changes with time and common usage. So words that are “commonly” misused, morph over time into accepted usage. I probably have a couple of college text books lying around that would refute some of the findings from this test… I have a feeling that a couple of her “dual answer” questions are not as “dual” as she may believe.
Sharl: It’s “Take a deep breath” or
“You forgot to breathe again, stupid!” (one of my most favorite Looney Tunes lines of all time)

    And just to brag:

My test tracked 4 variables. How you compared to other people your age and gender:

You scored higher than 99% on Beginner

You scored higher than 99% on Intermediate

You scored higher than 99% on Advanced

You scored higher than 99% on Expert

Yes English is a dynamic language, and the type of English also changes a lot depending on what kind of English you read, for example an academic study on Witchcraft as opposed to pulp-fiction. I have found myself using kind of old fashioned terms several times because I am very interested in history and enjoy roleplaying.

Don’t forget long walks on the beach at sunset… ; )

I received that exact same “tracking” outcome… I wonder how that figures with an “Advanced” vs an “Intermediate” score? Strange…

Me cant not speak the english:

    “You scored 86% Beginner, 73% Intermediate, 75% Advanced, and 72% Expert! (…)

There is no reason to feel bad though!”

  7. Dr Sharl:
you can always go “take a breather”!

    Sofa:
I too enjoy long walks on the beach at sunset. Is there a dedicated YahooGroup?

    Balint:
your revenge shall taste sweet when you present us with a Hungarian lingo test… :)

  8. Bobo says:

“You scored 93% Beginner, 73% Intermediate, 81% Advanced, and 61% Expert!” Not bad for a dutch speaking guy at two o’clock at night… and now off to bed. Goodnight everybody.

You did so extremely well, even I can’t find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don’t. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you’re not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!

Sofa, yes, it is true that language IS dynamic. However, I have my qualms about who should determine how the language changes.

I flat-out REFUSE to say “nucular!”

I always want to know which questions i got wrong these kind of tests. It’s strange how a test like this could not also be meant to be educational.
