Hmmm. Which FZ song did they parody first? “Sex” or “Big Leg Emma”? IMO the FZ tunes are funnier. And wittier.
Did you see them do this for Live Earth with the all-star Bass orchestra? The guys from Metallica definately made it funnier than hell.
The song ‘Sex’ witty? Christ, no.
Let’s play a game.
TWO of the previous THREE posters are the same person.
Can you guess which two?
WITTY -adjective- showing or characterized by quick and inventive verbal humour: “the bigger the cushion, the better the pushin’…”
Well, I’m just me, Scotty.
Don’t see anything inventive or particularly humorous in the lyrics to ‘Sex’ – it is one of Zappa’s lapses into crap, which (even as a big fan of the man) he sometimes made in the words department. Not offensive, just rubbish.
Anyway, a better Spinal Tap / Zappa connection would surely be the phrase ‘small the glove’…
…smell the glove, even…
C’mon…do you really feel that “Big Bottom” is better than “Sex” or “Big Leg Emma”? Okay, I’m all ears, make your point…
The Spinal Tap song is obviously a joke ridiculing not just the typical rock star’s juvenile attitude towards sex but also rock music’s generally puerile lyrics. The trouble with FZ’s song is that you get the feeling he might actually mean it as well! As it happens, I agree that this particular FZ song is not very good musically and only mildly amusing lyrically. Disappointing from someone capable of much better.
Urban, didn’t you notice, I’ve already made my point…
I can’t think of a sillier discussion to get swamped in, the lyrics of Big Bottom vs the lyrics of Sex.
Giantalbinopenguin, the only thing sillier I can think of is having this discussion with myself…
As for my original post, the point I posed was “which FZ song did they parody first?” Whether or not others liked said songs is beside the point really (it all a matter of opinion anyway).
As usual, Zappa was ahead of his time “ridiculing not just the typical rock star’s juvenile attitude towards sex but also rock music’s generally puerile lyrics” long before Spinal Tap was just an idea in the minds of a handful of unemployed actors.
The 3 main actors in Tap (along with most of the supporting cast) were not unemployed when it was filmed…
Not that it matters, but for the record.
Silly discussion, tho’…
“Silly discussion, tho’… ”
You can say that again.
