Spin Magazine’s 50 Greatest Bands Ever. Doesn’t feature Mothers Of Invention. Does feature Korn and Guns ‘n Roses. I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Hey there!
Just watching your list of the 50 Greatest Bands of All Time, noticed you’ve included bands like Pavement and Fugazi (which i really don’t know, but sounds like a delicious pizza variety) but you haven’t included Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention…You say: “To qualify, these groups had to have a roof-raising, history-changing sound, presence, or hairstyle. They also had to clearly influence today’s music in undeniable ways.” I think Zappa and the Mothers really suits all those requirements…
I don’t think you are insane, but I’m sad you haven’t included him.
I wrote to the Spin guys…
Heheh, Sharleena, way to go!..
Good for you Shar! Maybe I will too.
Did they really put the bit about the “roof-raising hairstyle”? If so… I don’t know, you just have to stand back for a while and admire it. I re-discovered “Greggary Peccary” (sp?) yesterday, so it just sounds familiar. Except THIS is for real!!!
…well they said “these groups had to have a roof-raising, history-changing sound, presence, OR hairstyle”…and they put The Beatles in the first place! so apparently for Spin, it’s enough having had “hairstyle” to become one of the best bands ever (no offense, Beatles fans out there :-)
I didn’t see Count Basie’s Band listed – or Glenn Miller’s. They totally dissed both Louis Armstrong and Jordan. WC Handy’s Band? Nowhere!
I don’t have a problem with the bands listed (well, most of the bands listed), I have a problem with “of all time”.
But, I suppose that “The 50 Best Bands that roughly fit our target demographic and have been around, or in memory, at least as long as we have” is a bit unwieldly.
Could have been a clerical error too…
SOFA
they say in the title Greatest Bands of All Time, but then in the text: “So here’s our look at 50 great bands from the 1960s forward.” (all time just from the 60s forward??) I believe Spin is in desperate need of a coherent editor!
