Looks like I’m going to have to buy a DVD player after all. Why can’t they have Zappa’s Halloweeen: Live In New York put on plain old CD as well? Looks like a mighty bitchin’ release though. Let the salivating commence…

now here’s a question – are all DVD’s the same?
e.g. If I were to somehow purchase this U.S. produced Halloween DVD, would I be able to play it on my U.K. DVD player.
answers please……

No, Ian, not all DVDs are the same, at least concerning video images. There are differing systems relating to the dot matrices utilized in reproducing the pictures. The American system is called NTSC, the Europeans use PAL. There are plenty of units for sale that accomodate both systems, but as this is a DVD AUDIO release, I’m not quite sure…
This release has spawned considerable debate at the zappa.com forums regarding this DVD-A format and what disc will play on what machine. I’m not certain what you can believe, or not. There might be some nugget there that leads to the TRUTH. You also have to sort through a lot of mindless crap to find any real info. You might want to start at the recent posts page and see where that gets you as a shortcut, if interested.

While there, you might also want to help bcbarney name her/his dog.
Forget what I said above and save some time by going directly to the DTS entertainment (the releaser of said release under license by the ZFT) FAQ page
http://www.dtsentertainment.com/faq.php
..but if you really want to help name the dog….
Is bcbarneys dog a poodle?
If so, calling it TONY would seem appropriate.
G&S Music site has “details coming soon” on the Halloween DVD release so hopefully it will be available in “Region 2”
format.
I just lifted this listener review from (thanks garry!!):
http://www.zappa.com/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=albums;action=display;num=1044441939;start=1
“Only listened to it once so far and, of course, it’s great, it’s Frank. The Ancient Armaments sounds different from the one on Drafted, but I guess I will have to hook up the old turntable to compare. I listened on headphones so I got a pretty good taste of the fidelity that they are trying to achieve. My system is not set up for 5.1 so I will have to wait to find out if it gets any better. Naturally Frank’s solos are nothing short of beautiful but we all know that from listening to the boot for all these years. As for the tricks and treats, they have included video, audio and on screen liner notes complete with lyrics. The videos are a black and white Suicide Chump with a slightly differrent lineup than the Halloween show that has a less than perfect audio mix and the Dancin Fool from SNL. I only listened to the radio interview for a minute or so (too anxious to get to the show), but Frank seems in fine form as it was taped just prior to the event. Fairly decent packaging and extensive liner notes, all in all another great collection from our hero.”
Perhaps a measure of the “fringe” nature of this entertainment software technology, perhaps a measure of a struggling software technology company’s limited resources to promote and deliver a product; but I have yet to see this title in any of the usual retail outlets I visit in my major metropolitan area of the US – not even in the outlets specifically identified in the DTS entertainment website.
Gawd, the hoops they make us go through being fans o’ frank…
